Regency Period Mahogany Bedside Cabinet with a Pull-out Step

19th century
Description

A rare Regency period mahogany Bedside Cabinet with a pull-out STEP. The front contains two flame-mahogany drawer fronts with oval panels and oval ring handles.

The pull-out step is to aid getting into/out of bed, where a deep mattress can make climbing difficult for some. Above the step is a hinged cupboard of useful size, which has an unusual opening action (key escutcheon lever – press down to release – no key needed). The top has a solid gallery with two pierced ‘carry’ handles to sides. A good deep patina, wonderful colour and in excellent original condition.

Dimensions: Height: 30.75 inches. Width: 18.25 inches. Depth: 18.8 inches (78 x 46.5 x 48cm)

Date: c.1825-30

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency bedside cabinets were multifunctional bedroom pieces created during the early 19th century in Britain, often featuring gallery tray tops, enclosed cupboards, or pull-out commode steps to conceal domestic items.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised high-grade flame mahogany veneers, solid pine or oak drawer linings, and decorative boxwood stringing along with brass drop handles.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brass hardware with natural surface oxidisation, solid pine framing as secondary timber, and fine boxwood inlay.

A Regency cabinet works well as a nightstand alongside an upholstered bed, paired with a modern table lamp and ceramic accents to balance classic proportions with contemporary decor.

Wax the wood surface twice annually using a high-quality beeswax polish, keeping the cabinet away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp conditions.
