Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An astragal glazed bookcase features glass doors set with delicate wooden glazing bars arranged in geometric or decorative patterns. This style gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, providing both protection for books and an ornate display element.

Victorian craftsmen primarily utilised solid woods such as mahogany, oak, and walnut, often finished with rich stains and hand-rubbed wax. Glazed sections used hand-blown or float glass secured with thin timber astragal mouldings.

Authentic Victorian pieces generally exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, thick wood veneers, original cast brass hardware, and secondary woods like pine or oak used for drawer linings and back panels. Unrefined underside surfaces and natural timber oxidisation inside cupboards also indicate period age.

Positioning a symmetrical pair of tall bookcases on either side of a fireplace, doorway, or central artwork creates structure and visual balance. Filling the shelves with a curated mix of books, ceramics, and framed prints softens the overall vertical line.

Maintain timber surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Clean glass panes with a mild glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the wood.
