N Wilson Antiques Clocks has dated this Empire Fusee Mantel Clock to the 19th Century.
The case has a stepped top leading to a lovely patterned section dividing the top and the square body with stunning Tuscan pilasters to each corner. The base is then stepped out again to make it level with the top. The case has fabulous grand proportions which show the clocks high level of quality and craftsmanship.
The dial is then enamel and set out in black roman numerals with a thin ring to the outside marking the minutes with small triangles, and diamonds at each five minute interval. The dial then has a fabulous, intricately patterned surround as well as a domed glass set into a patterned brass bezel / door. The centre of the dial is then signed very finely by the maker “FATTON ELEVE DE BREGUET LONDON NO 35” showing that the piece was No 35 made by Frederick Fatton. Finally the dial has two wonderful shaped, blued steel hands.
The movement is then both wound, and accessed from the back and comes complete with its pendulum and winding key. The clock is ticking away as it should and the pendulum can be fully regulated. The movement is then of the upmost quality being a single chain driven fusee example!
“Fredrick Louis Fatton first worked for Abraham Louis Breguet in Russia between 1801-1807. By 1814 he was Breguet's independent agent in London. Interestingly, Fatton is one of several men who signed their work Elève de Breguet. Fatton was the inventor of the Inking Chronograph, see George Daniels, The Art of Breguet, p. 72. Fatton took out two patents for inking chronographs in 1822, numbers 4645 and 4707.”
