Nineteenth-century French giltwood mirrors are defined by carved timber frames adorned with Rococo motifs such as shells, C-scrolls, and acanthus leaves. Many feature marginal glass borders surrounding a central mirror plate to increase light reflection.

The frames were constructed from hand-carved timber coated with layers of gesso before applying gold leaf using water gilding techniques. Red or yellow bole clay was layered beneath the gold leaf, adding depth to the burnished highlights.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand carving, subtle rubbing on high points revealing red bole clay, and hand-planed pine or fir backboards. Original glass from this period often displays minor silvering oxidisation.

A large giltwood mirror can be positioned centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece or mounted above a console table in a hallway. The warm metallic tones create contrast when paired alongside neutral walls and clean-lined contemporary furniture.
