Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mirrors from the 19th century often featured symmetrical oval frames made from carved wood or moulded gesso, typically finished with gold leaf gilded surfaces. They were widely designed to hang above mantels or sideboards to reflect candlelight and broaden visual space in traditional reception rooms.

Traditional gilt mirrors were constructed using pine or oak bases covered in composition or gesso, which was then carved and layered with thin sheets of gold leaf. Hand-cut plate glass with silvered mercury backing was commonly fitted inside the moulded frame.

Authentic pieces often display subtle wear on the gilding, revealing red or grey clay bole undercoats beneath the gold leaf. The back boards usually consist of heavy, hand-sawn timber panels secured with iron nails, while the glass may show natural silvering degradation or slight optical distortion.

A substantial gilded mirror creates a striking focal point when mounted above a contemporary console table or minimalist fireplace mantel. The soft curved silhouette contrasts effectively against clean architectural lines and neutral paint palettes.

Gilded frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cloths or liquid cleaners that dissolve gold leaf and water-gesso finishes. Mirror glass should be cleaned by applying specialist spray to a microfibre cloth rather than spraying directly onto the glass edge.
