A small, pretty, brass dial moonphase longcase clock by Thomas Hall of Rumsey (Romsey, Hampshire). 8 day movement, striking the hours on a bell, 12” chapter ring and spandrels’ dial with painted and silvered moon disc.

The case is of solid mahogany, with a long trunk door and featuring dentil moulding and a blind fret to the break-arched hood and attached reeded pillars to the hood door.

Serviced and guaranteed for 3 years.

Archive II

Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the mid-seventeenth century following the development of the pendulum and anchor escapement mechanism. They gained widespread prominence throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as accurate timekeeping instruments housed in tall wooden cases.

Traditional longcase clock cabinets were crafted from woods such as mahogany, oak, walnut, or pine, frequently decorated with flame veneers or marquetry. Clockworks were constructed using heavy brass plates, steel arbors, cast brass dials, and silvered chapter rings.

Authentic Georgian longcase clocks typically feature hand-engraved brass or painted dials, maker signatures indicating specific regional towns, and cast brass corner spandrels. Additional indicators include weight-driven pendulum movements, hand-cut gear teeth, and period-correct cabinet construction such as hand-sawn dovetail joints.

A longcase clock functions as a strong architectural focal point when positioned in an entry hall, stair landing, or formal study. Placing rich mahogany woodwork against neutral walls or alongside understated contemporary furnishings creates a balanced juxtaposition between classic horology and modern interior design.

Longcase clocks require precise levelling on a stable floor surface and regular winding according to their movement design. Dusting the wooden case with a soft dry cloth and having the mechanical movement cleaned and lubricated by a professional horologist every five to seven years will preserve the mechanism.
