Description

18th Century mahogany longcase clock by John Wood of Grantham (known to be working from 1753-1797) An imposing mahogany clock with moon phase, quarter chiming and day / date functions. The brass dial has hours, minutes and subsidiary second hands and displays for moonphase (in the break arch), day (bottom right) and date (bottom left), and the control functions for chime and strike. The day and date functions are 7 and 31 tooth star wheels actuated by 24-hour wheels in the motion work. Rack striking is to a single bell, the rack being released by the chiming train at the hour. The quarter chimes are to a carillon of eight bells by eight hammers actuated by a pin barrel. The strike and chimes functions are several, the top right subsidiary allows full striking and chiming of hours and quarters, or for these functions to be arrested, the top left subsidiary allows the quarters to be chimed or silenced by shifting the pin barrel across such that the hammers and not actuated. The moonphase is knocked on twice daily by a pin mounted to the snail on the hour wheel. Only one other piece is known by this maker, a verge watch recorded by G.H. Baillie. Circa 1770.

Martlesham Antiques is a family run business and has been trading since 1984. Located in Suffolk just outside Woodbridge, Martlesham Antiques is run from a spacious thatched cottage housing nine large showrooms with a vast adjacent car park.

Specialising in 18th and 19th Century furniture, together with creating custom hand-made furniture which is supplied to various interior designers, trade and the retail market. Every piece on the showroom floor is in excellent condition and ready to go straight into the buyers home or premises.

All of Martlesham Antiques furniture is hand polished by their own French polishers and restorers to a very high standard. We are also a member of LAPADA, the association of art and antiques.

FAQs

Developed in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement, longcase clocks allowed for long pendulums requiring narrow wooden enclosures. During the 18th century, British clockmaking reached a peak in craftsmanship, with provincial makers producing brass-dial movements housed in fine mahogany cases.

Georgian longcase clocks were primarily constructed with solid oak carcasses veneered in imported West Indian mahogany or flame mahogany. Dials were composed of cast brass plates with applied silvered chapter rings and spandrels, accompanied by steel hands and iron weights.

Authentic 18th-century examples feature hand-engraved brass or silvered dials rather than painted sheet metal, original iron weights, hand-cut gear teeth, and hand-dovetailed trunk cabinetry. Makers frequently engraved their name and location directly onto the dial face or boss.

A longcase clock serves as a focal architectural anchor in hallways, stairwell landings, or dining rooms. Positioning the piece against neutral, unadorned walls allows the dark mahogany grain and brass detailing to contrast cleanly with modern decorative schemes.
