Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III burr walnut chest of drawers dates from the mid-to-late 18th century and is characterised by highly figured burr walnut veneers, symmetrical drawer configurations, crossbanded borders, and classical proportions typical of British Georgian design.

Cabinetmakers utilised solid oak or pine secondary woods for drawer linings, applying thin decorative burr walnut veneers to external surfaces. Construction often featured hand-cut dovetail joints, cockbeaded drawer edges, brass hardware, and turned bun feet or bracket feet.

Authentic period pieces exhibit uneven hand-sawn wood marks on secondary timber, hand-cut dovetail joinery, age-related shrinkage in the veneer, and genuine oxidisation on interior drawer bottoms and brass fixings.

A Georgian walnut chest functions well as a focal storage piece in a hallway, bedroom, or living area. Combining its dark timber tones with neutral wall colours, contemporary table lamps, or minimal ceramic vessels creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the chest away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting and timber shrinkage. Clean the surface with a dry lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax once or twice a year to maintain moisture and patina.
