Regency Mahogany Dressing Table Mirror

19th century
Description

A high quality Regency dressing table mirror with two drawers and reeded mirror support columns terminating in bronze finials. The frame of the oval mirror is inlaid with ebony stars and bold stringing, complimenting the rich 'plum pudding' mahogany. The brass handles are original, there is a small very minor piece missing from one of them, but this does not take away from the beauty of this mirror and we think it adds to the character. The original glass has a soft quality that adds to the authenticity of this Regency piece. Please note that the images of the glass are edited to remove reflections, the last picture with the reflections shows the unedited glass.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency dressing table mirror, often termed a toilet mirror or swing mirror, dates from the early 19th century and features classical proportions, fine timber veneers such as mahogany, and integrated storage drawers beneath a tilting mirror plate.

These mirrors were primarily constructed using solid mahogany or oak frames veneered with flame mahogany, satinwood, or ebony inlays, incorporating brass hardware, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and silvered mirror glass.

Authenticity can be determined by examining hand-sawn secondary timbers inside the drawers, original brassware with hand-cut screws, early silvered glass showing light oxidisation, and characteristic neoclassical marquetry such as star inlays or reeded uprights.

A Regency mirror can be placed atop a contemporary chest of drawers, a hallway console table, or a bedroom vanity to add historical depth and architectural structure through its rich wood tones and geometric form.

Dust the mahogany surface with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain, taking care to clean the glass using a dedicated cleaner applied to the cloth rather than sprayed directly near the wood veneer.
