Antique Silver Stamp Box and Blotter

1900 - 1920
Description

An unusual solid sterling silver roller blotter incorporating two lidded stamp compartments.

Dating from the Edwardian era, it is hallmarked for Chester 1905 ad has the maker's mark for James Deakin & Sons. The stamp compartments, one double and the other a large single space, have hinged lids which make photographing quite tricky! The wooden base is showing some signs of wear on the sides and there are a couple of small bruises on the silver handle but these signs of wear do not detract from what is an attractive and unusual desk item.

Width: 7.5cm

Height: 6cm.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A rocker blotter is a desktop instrument designed with a curved base to absorb excess wet ink from fountain pens or dip pens using absorbent paper. Models featuring integrated stamp boxes were popularised during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to consolidate writing paraphernalia into a single desk accessory.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid sterling silver or silver plate mounted over a weighted wooden core. The base often features a curved wooden rocker plate lined with leather or felt, designed to hold replaceable sheets of absorbent blotting paper.

Authentic silver examples generally display maker marks, purity hallmarks, or town marks stamped along the rim or hinged compartment lids. Examine the wear on the silver plate or sterling finish, particularly around the central handle knob and compartment hinges where handling naturally occurs.

Place the piece atop a dark wood writing desk, alongside modern leather desk pads or brass stationery trays in a home office or study. It also serves as a tactile decorative object on a styled bookshelf or side table.

Clean the metal surfaces using a soft microfibre cloth and a specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh chemicals that might strip aged patina. Ensure moisture does not penetrate the underlying wooden core or leather blotter lining during cleaning.
