Victorian Sampson Mordan Double End Perfume Bottle

19th century
For Sale by TJR Trading
Description

This is a Victorian hallmarked sterling silver double ended scent bottle. It was assayed in London in 1886 and made by Sampson Mordon & Co.

It has a circular wrythen body. One end has a hinged lid with the original glass stopper. The other end has a threaded screw on lid. The interior of each end is gilded. The interior of the hinged lid has a kite stamp. There is a monogram to both lids.

Unfortunately the stopper is currently stuck fast and there is a chip to one side of the stopper which is visible in the last photograph. Otherwise the perfume bottle has surface marks commensurate with age but is in good general condition.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian double-ended scent bottle is a dual-compartment container designed to hold two different liquids or preparations, typically liquid perfume behind a screw cap at one end and smelling salts behind a hinged cap at the other.

Craftsmen constructed these bottles using sterling silver, glass, gold plate, and occasionally brass, often incorporating precision-cut internal glass stoppers to prevent evaporation.

Authentic pieces carry British silver hallmarks, including the distinct makers mark S.M or S.M & Co, along with purity marks such as the lion passant and specific city assay stamps.

Place the item on a mirrored vanity tray, display it alongside perfume bottles on a dressing table, or house it within a glass tabletop cabinet to highlight its silversmithing details.

Gently polish the silver surface using a soft microfibre cloth designed for precious metals, avoiding abrasive pastes or submerging the mechanical hinges and screw threads in water.
