This ANTIQUE ENGLISH BLUE & WHITE TRANSFER PRINTED SERVING PLATTER, with gadrooned detail to the edge, bears the printed mark of ELKIN KNIGHT & BRIDGWOOD and the PATTERN NAME 'CANTON VIEWS'. It dates from circa 1830.

The PLATTER is decorated with an idealised Chinese Marine Scene.

The condition is good with just glaze rubbing to the edge. There are no cracks, chips or restoration.

FAQs

Transferware developed in Staffordshire, England, during the late eighteenth century as a process to replicate expensive hand-painted Chinese porcelain. Engraved copper plates were used to print patterns onto tissue paper, which was then transferred to earthenware before firing and glazing.

Transferware is typically constructed from earthenware or ironstone pottery. Cobalt oxide pigment was predominantly used for the decoration because it could withstand the high temperatures required during the glaze firing process without losing colour intensity.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces often feature impressed or printed makers marks on the base, slight misalignments or seams in the transfer print, glaze crazing, and minor wear around the unglazed foot rim consistent with age.

Platters can be displayed vertically on a plate stand atop a sideboard, hung securely on a wall using wire plate hangers, or layered inside a traditional Welsh dresser to add historical pattern and color depth.

Hand wash gently in lukewarm water using a mild liquid soap and a non-abrasive sponge. Avoid dishwashers, microwaves, prolonged soaking, or harsh chemical cleaners, as these can damage the glaze and compromise the ceramic structure.
