FAQs

Transferware ceramic production developed in Staffordshire, England, during the late 18th century as a technique to mass-produce complex patterns. Designs were engraved onto copper plates, printed onto tissue paper, and transferred onto earthenware before firing and glazing.

These platters were typically constructed from earthenware or ironstone bodies and finished with a clear protective glaze. Cobalt oxide pigment was selected for the blue decoration because it withstands extremely high kiln temperatures without burning off.

Authentic items frequently feature visible seams or small overlaps in the transfer print, impressed makers marks or numbers on the base, and fine glaze crazing caused by age and thermal expansion.

The platter can be displayed standing upright on a plate rack along a sideboard top, mounted on a wall in a curated arrangement, or laid flat as a central element on a dining table.

Platters must be washed gently by hand using warm water and a mild dishwashing detergent. Avoid automated dishwashers, harsh abrasive pads, and sudden thermal shock to protect the ceramic and glaze integrity.
