Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Vernis Martin vitrine is a French glazed display cabinet featuring decorative lacquer work that imitates East Asian lacquerware, a technique perfected in the 18th century by the Martin brothers. These cabinets typically incorporate Louis XV Rococo flourishes, curved glass panels, gilt bronze mounts, and hand-painted pastoral scenes on the lower sections.

Traditional French vitrines were commonly crafted from fine hardwoods such as kingwood, rosewood, or tulipwood veneers laid over an oak framework. They feature cast gilt bronze ormolu mounts, bowed or serpentine glass panes, and hand-painted lacquer panels.

Authentic pieces display detailed hand-painting with natural age craquelure on the lacquer panels rather than modern printed transfers. Additionally, look for heavy, hand-chased gilt bronze mounts with crisp detailing and traditional joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetails on internal framing.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall to allow the warm wood tones and ornate gilt accents to serve as a central visual feature. Utilise the interior glass shelves to display curated collections of ceramics, glassware, or small sculpted objects, balancing period ornamentation with modern simplicity.

Dust the wooden surfaces and gilt bronze mounts regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical cleaners that can degrade original lacquers. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking, veneer lifting, or fading of the painted artwork.
