Magnificent Antique North-west Persian Gallery Carpet 5.56m X 1.63m, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

This wonderful gallery carpet was woven in North-West Persia, in the famous town of Bakshaish around 1880. It has the characteristic camel background colour associated with Bakshaish carpets and the classical herati field design and complementary terracotta border. Finely knotted with hand-spun wool and coloured with wonderful natural dyes. Note in particular, the lovely shades of terracotta and green. The herati design is repeated through the field in an all-over design and is very nicely spaced which gives the carpet a very elegant look. The pile is god throughout, and the overall condition is excellent. The size is extremely hard to find and would be ideal for a wide hallway or gallery.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

North-West Persian gallery carpets, crafted during the late nineteenth century, are distinguished by their elongated proportions designed specifically for wide corridors or long rooms. They feature complex curvilinear or geometric all-over floral patterns, executed with hand-spun wool and natural dyes.

These textiles are traditionally hand-knotted using local wool for the pile, woven onto a durable cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. The fibres are dyed using natural extracts derived from local plants, roots, and minerals.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-knotted construction with subtle colour variations known as abrash due to natural dye batches. The undersides reveal clear pattern symmetry matching the pile, without rubber backing or synthetic adhesives.

An elongated gallery carpet effectively anchors expansive entryways, wide hallways, or open-plan living spaces. Combining the intricate classical patterns with streamlined modern furniture provides a balanced textural contrast.

Maintain the rug by vacuuming regularly using a suction-only tool without a rotating beater bar. Professional hand-washing is recommended when required, along with periodic rotation to ensure even wear.
