Antique Malayer Rug

A stunning antique Malayer rug, in brilliant original condition, dating around 1910 the wool is soft and in impeccable order.  After its recent professional wash by ourselves the colours are vibrant and full of interest. The design and colour palette looks similar to that of the Gol Farang design.  But it appears to be a vase of flowers with birds either side.  Fabulous variation of dye changes, known as abrash, which is where the weaver has used different shades of wool, which has faded and oxidised differently over the last 100 plus years.   Original ends and side wrappings and a near perfect full pile height, a great decorative and sturdy rug.

Depicting stylised floral bouquets known as the 'Gol Farang' pattern, which translates to foreign flower in Farsi.  This design was mainly made for European export in the late 19th century to mid 20th.  Using classical French designs from the famous workshops in France of Aubusson and Savonnerie.  The wool is extremely soft and of exceptional quality.

Malayer is a large village located between the major weaving areas of Hamadan and Sarouk in Northwest Persia. In Malayer and the small villages surrounding it, production was almost exclusively small antique rugs and runners made by individual weavers in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
