Bronze sculptures of Narcissus are commonly based on an ancient Roman bronze statuette discovered at Pompeii in 1862. During the nineteenth century, reproductions of this figure became popular Grand Tour souvenirs among European collectors and scholars.

These sculptures were generally produced using the lost-wax casting technique to capture fine anatomical details. Craftsmen then hand-chased the metal surface and applied dark chemical patinas to simulate aged ancient bronzes.

Authentic period casts exhibit crisp hand-chasing, expected weight consistent with solid bronze, and subtle natural wear along exposed surfaces. Markings from established Italian foundries or specific construction traits on the base also help determine authenticity.

A classical bronze sculpture provides a sculptural focal point when positioned on a mantelpiece, desk, or open shelving. The dark metallic finish creates strong visual contrast against lighter neutral backdrops or timber panelling.

Dust the surface regularly using a dry microfibre cloth or a soft brush for intricate areas. Avoid liquid polishers, alcohol, or harsh chemical solutions that can strip the chemical patina, applying a microcrystalline wax sparingly if protection is required.
