Antique South Caucasian Karabagh Region Long Rug, Outstanding Colour and Condition, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 7ft 9in x 3ft 10in (236 x 116cm).

Antique South Caucasian Karabagh region long rug with a vertical row of five octagons on a clear red ground.

Circa 1880.

This is a truly outstanding example of Caucasian weaving, the wool quality is excellent, very soft to the touch, the dyes are first class, giving clear bright colours. The balance of the design and the wonderful yellow ground border sets this rug apart from most other Caucasians of this period.

A very similar rug is illustrated in 'Qarajeh to Quba' by Raoul E. Tschebull, Hali Publications, plate 41; page 174. Where the rug is attributed to the village of Boyuk Bahmanli, on the Aras river in the Fuzuli district of Karabagh.

The rug is in excellent condition with very slight wear and good pile. There is some corrosion to the black as one would expect.

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.

Stock Number: H-328.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the southern Caucasus region, Karabagh rugs are renowned for their geometric or floral medallion designs, elongated proportions, and saturated dye palettes influenced by both Persian and local weaving traditions.

These textiles are typically hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and foundation, coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes to create lasting tones.

Authentic pieces display symmetrical knots, natural colour variations known as abrash, flexible wool foundations, and traditional geometric motifs rather than uniform machine stitching.

Long rugs function as grounding focal points in corridors, entry hallways, or alongside large furniture pieces, providing contrast against minimalist hardwood or stone flooring.

Regular suction-only vacuuming, using a protective rug underlay, rotating the textile periodically to balance wear, and securing professional specialist cleaning will preserve the wool fibres.
