Late Georgian Decanter Circa 1830

18th century
For Sale by TJR Trading
Description

This is a late Georgian decanter, circa 1830. It was hand blown from lead crystal and has cut detail. It has a cut conical stopper and a bulb shaped body.

The stopper doesn't quite sit perfectly in the decanter, so it might not be the original stopper. It sits proud by about 3mm and wobbles slightly. There is some wear to the tip of the stopper. There is wear to the underside of the decanter. The rim of the neck is not perfectly round so it is possible it may have been ground at some point, or it may be from the manufacturing process. Otherwise it appears in good order.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Georgian decanters typically feature heavy lead crystal, intricate wheel-cut geometric patterns, broad shoulders, and ground glass stoppers designed for serving wine or spirits.

They were crafted from heavy lead glass using hand-blowing techniques followed by hand-cutting or wheel-engraving to form faceted motifs and decorative neck rings.

Authentic Georgian decanters often display a ground glass stopper numbered to match the neck interior, pontil marks on the base, and age-appropriate wear on the underside.

Display the decanter on a timber sideboard, a polished tray, or inside a glass cabinet to highlight its faceted clarity alongside contemporary barware.

Hand wash with lukewarm water and mild soap, avoid sudden temperature changes, and allow the interior to dry completely before replacing the stopper.
