Persian Tribal Rug 1.60m X 1.36m, Circa 1880

Description

Woven by the Afshar tribe of south-east Persia in the 19th century, this wonderful tribal rug has borrowed a design from the classical Persian medallion carpet tradition, but has adapted it in a strikingly graphic way. Note the oversize anchors at the ends of the medallion, and the dancing figures. The checkerboard that surrounds the medallion is beautifully detailed. The pile is woven in a soft lustrous wool, and all the dyes are natural. This rug has some minor corrosion to the indigo dye in the field, otherwise it is very good condition.

Persian tribal rugs were woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes across Persia, including the Qashqai, Khamseh, and Bakhtiari groups. Unlike urban workshop carpets made from painted cartoons, tribal rugs were woven from memory, resulting in bold geometric medallions, stylized animal motifs, and unique design variations.

These rugs were constructed entirely by hand using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation warp and weft. Dyes were derived from natural plant and mineral sources, such as madder root for deep reds and indigo for navy blues, producing soft tonal variations known as abrash.

Authentic 19th-century tribal pieces exhibit a flexible wool foundation, hand-bound selvedges, and slight geometric asymmetry due to portable loom construction. The reverse side clearly displays hand-tied knots, while natural vegetable dyes show subtle, intentional colour shifting across the field.
