Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency style overmantel mirror, popular in early 19th-century Britain, features classical proportions, detailed giltwood carvings, and decorative cresting. Designed to sit above a fireplace hearth, these mirrors incorporated motifs inspired by Greco-Roman and French Empire aesthetics.

Antique giltwood mirrors were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood frames coated with gesso layers and covered in thin gold leaf. The reflective plate was traditionally crafted using mercury-amalgam glass or early silvered glass techniques.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display signs of natural age, such as fine shrinkage cracks in the gesso and reddish clay bole visible beneath worn gold areas. The mirror glass often shows dark spots or foxing, and the back is typically fitted with hand-sawn wooden backboards.

An antique gold mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a simple mantelpiece or modern console table to create visual contrast. Positioning it opposite a light source reflects natural daylight, while surrounding clean lines allow the ornate gilding to stand out.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that dissolve gesso and strip gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be applied sparingly to a microfibre cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the mirror surface.
