Edwardian giltwood mirrors typically feature classical proportions decorated with subtle naturalistic ornament, such as floral motifs, ribband swags, and beaded borders. Produced in the early 20th century, these designs favoured lighter shapes and oval profiles compared to the heavier moulding profiles of the Victorian period.

Giltwood frames were constructed around a carved timber substrate, typically pine or lime wood, which was coated in layers of gesso plaster. Microscopic gold leaf was then laid over a clay bole base using water gilding or oil gilding methods before hand burnishing created areas of highlight.

Authentic period giltwood pieces display light surface wear that reveals the underlying reddish or dark clay bole beneath the gilding on raised areas. The reverse sides usually show hand-cut timber backing boards, oxidised fixing tacks, and irregular carved tooling marks.
