Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Toilet mirrors, also termed dressing glasses, gained widespread popularity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Designed to sit atop dressing tables or chests of drawers, they allowed individuals to adjust the glass angle for personal grooming and often featured built-in drawers for storing small vanity items.

These mirrors typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, often decorated with satinwood or boxwood stringing and inlaid banding. The base drawers commonly incorporate hand-cut dovetail joints, while the mirror frame pivots between turned uprights topped with turned wood or cast brass urn finials.

Authentic pieces often exhibit original silvering or slight desilveration and foxing on the mirror plate. Examining the underside and back panels reveals period-correct tool marks, natural timber shrinkage, and hand-cut joinery around the drawer construction and swivel mounts.

An antique toilet mirror can be placed atop a contemporary chest of drawers, sideboard, or dressing area to provide contrasting texture and warm timber tones. The tilting plate reflects ambient light, creating depth when set against neutral or dark wall finishes.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the grain. Avoid chemical sprays or ammonia-based glass cleaners near the wood frame, as liquid runoff can damage the inlay and original finish.
