19th Century Bronze Seated Putti on Inlaid Wood Base, C 1870

19th century
For Sale by Curious Antiques
Description

Stunning large antique 19th century bronze depicting a seated Putti on a nice inlaid wood base featuring a landscape scene, c1870. The bronze statue is designed to be removed from the base and is beautifully cast and modelled. It is incredibly heavy for its size - over 4 kgs and has aged well with great patina. This is a fine quality bronze but I cannot find a signature.

Overall condition is good, The bronze has not been over polished and presents very well. I can see two very small dents and a small hole has been drilled into the base which has minor surface wear.

Dimensions: 30 cm tall x 18 cm wide x 14 cm deep, just over 4 kgs in weight.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Putti figures, depicting winged or unwinged cherubic children, originated in classical antiquity and were revived during the Renaissance. By the 19th century, bronze putti sculptures were widely produced across Europe as decorative ornaments for private residences and grand interiors.

These pieces were typically cast in bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting methods, followed by hand-chasing and application of a chemical patina to achieve a deep dark tone. Bases were frequently constructed from timber decorated with marquetry or parquetry inlay using contrasting veneers.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural surface wear, crisp hand-finished detail around features and drapery, and original casting seams or interior core traces. Wooden plinths from the era will display natural shrinkage, aged varnish, and hand-cut marquetry joints.

Position the piece on a mantelpiece, console table, or within a bookshelf alongside leather-bound books or ceramic vessels. The dark bronze and wood tones contrast well against neutral backdrops or rich wall colours.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a natural bristle brush to reach crevices. Avoid harsh chemicals or metal polishes, which strip the natural patina; a thin coat of microcrystalline wax can be applied sparingly to protect both the bronze and wood.
