Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A settle is a high-backed wooden bench with armrests, popular across Europe from the medieval period through the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed primarily to block cold draughts in unheated rooms, settles were common fixtures in halls, inns, and farmhouse kitchens.

17th-century settles were predominantly constructed from solid English oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. Back panels were typically framed with hand-planed rails and stiles, often decorated with hand-carved lunettes, guilloche patterns, or botanical motifs.

Authentic period settles display hand-hewn tool marks, irregular peg placement, and natural shrinkage or distortion in the wood over time. Look for deep, uneven surface patination in unexposed areas and historical wear along the footrails and armrests.

An oak settle works well as architectural seating in an entryway, hallway, or boot room. Pairing the dark timber with neutral walls, contemporary linen cushions, or modern artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and minimalist interior design.

Preserve the original finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent wood shrinkage or splitting.
