Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A canterbury is a low wooden stand featuring vertical dividers, originally designed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries to store bound sheet music. Named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who reportedly ordered the first example, these pieces often included a lower drawer and brass castors for portability.

Craftsmen primarily utilised high-grade cabinet woods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut, frequently accented with turned spindles, fretwork, or carved motifs. Functional elements included dovetailed drawers, brass drawer pulls, and brass cup castors fitted to turned legs.

Authentic Regency pieces showcase period construction techniques, including hand-dovetailed drawer joints, original brass castors, and age-appropriate wear along the dividers and base. The wood often exhibits patination, hand-carved classical details like laurel wreaths or lyres, and secondary pine or oak drawer linings.

Whilst originally created for sheet music, a canterbury works effectively in contemporary settings as a sofa-side magazine holder, a dedicated vinyl record storage rack, or an entryway organiser. Its compact proportions allow it to slide neatly alongside armchairs or within alcoves.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, cracking, and fading of the finish.
