Grand George III Mahogany Canterbury

18th century
Description

This GRAND GEORGE III MAHOGANY CANTERBURY has three balustraded sections to the top with a drawer below.

Your attention is drawn to the melon-shaped feet in which sit the original brass castors, hidden from view. There is decorative carving to the four outer posts and to their caps.

With each side being panelled, the CANTERBURY is free-standing and can be viewed from all sides.

As well as holding magazines, as can be seen from the last photograph, the sections are large enough to hold two bottles, side by side, and four deep.

The CANTERBURY is in good original condition with a lovely colour and patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Canterbury is a low, partitioned furniture piece created in late eighteenth-century England, named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who commissioned the design to store sheet music and bound volumes.

Georgian Canterburys are constructed primarily from solid or veneered Cuban mahogany, featuring hand-turned vertical spindles, dovetailed base drawers, and turned legs fitted with brass castors or reeded bun feet.

Authentic George III examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer, original wood shrinkage along timber grain lines, hand-turned spindle dividers, and natural oxidisation on the interior surfaces.

While originally intended for music scores, an antique Canterbury functions in modern settings alongside a sofa or armchair as a holder for periodicals, art books, or loose prints.

Preserve mahogany surfaces by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and high humidity.
