Serpentine Antiques has dated this Victorian Silver Vesta Case to the 1890s.
Maker is Henry Titterton Brockwell trading as Brockwell & Son.
They were made in many materials, and some in precious metals like this one, usually with gilt linings, to protect against corrosion from the match heads. They were widely made and used from 1890-1920. Many had a loop attached, like this one, to attach to an Albert chain. Now, they are very collectable and interesting small antique silver items.
Size-2 3/8 inches long by 2 1/8 inches wide, and weighing 50 grams.
Hallmarks are rubbed, and there are some age commensurate dints and minor line marks to safe, showing it was well used and enjoyed. The solid fold down clasp and side piano hinge are very tight, secure and even.
Match safes were meant to hold matches, but can now also be used for pills, two photos and the like.
A nice well made, heavy and large example.
