Dealers Notes

When buying it is important appreciate antiques have long histories of daily use and as such, over time they gain minor scratches, marks, knocks, shrinkage splits, signs of old woodworm, lifts and losses to veneer, which combine with care and years of polishing to create an individual character and patina. We describe the main flaws and those that fall outside of this bracket but cannot describe each marks separately and therefore suggest you do take the time to request extra photos. We do offer a 14 day money back guarantee if you are unhappy with your purchase but cannot refund the return shipping cost. If you are not sure please do not buy without clarifying or take the view that the only way to have it as near to new as possible is to have it fully and comprehensively restored.

For delivery we use a small carrier experience in carrying antique furniture. Delivery is usually within 31 days and the carrier will make arrangements with you directly. We can provide contact details of other carriers if required.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Regency dining chairs from the 1820s and 1830s often feature open balloon-shaped backrests with smooth curvilinear frames, transitioning into early Victorian proportions. They typically showcase turned front legs, curved sabre rear legs, and rich wood finishes such as rosewood or mahogany.

Cabinetmakers of this era favoured dense hardwoods, predominantly Brazilian rosewood and West Indian mahogany, valued for their deep figure and rich tone. Upholstery was traditionally built using horsehair padding, webbing, and woven silk damask or leather top fabrics.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, genuine rosewood timber or heavy veneer, and hand-turned leg detailing. Inspecting the underside reveals aged timber frames, hand-carved rail cuts, and historic upholstery tack marks.

Pairing dark rosewood dining chairs with contemporary light wood or marble dining tables creates a refined stylistic contrast. Neutral textiles, modern minimalist lighting, and clean wall tones help highlight the dark timber silhouette without overpowering the space.

Position chairs away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the timber from warping or splitting. Treat the wood periodically with high-grade beeswax polish, wiping along the grain, and vacuum upholstered seats gently with a soft brush attachment.
