Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian hanging corner cupboard is a wall-mounted storage cabinet designed during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries to utilize room corners efficiently. These cabinets typically featured panelled doors, iron or brass hardware, and interior shelving for storing spices, glassware, or household items.

These cupboards were predominantly constructed from solid native timber such as oak, walnut, or pine, joined with traditional hand-cut dovetails and mortise-and-tenon joinery. Additional detailing often included fielded door panels, crossbanded inlay, and hand-turned wooden knobs or brass escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-sawn tool marks on the reverse panels, irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, and natural oxidisation around metal hardware. The interior timber often displays an uneven finish, while the rear boards form a ninety-degree angle designed to align with corner walls.

A hanging corner cupboard can be integrated into contemporary spaces by mounting it in a dining room corner or hallway alcove to display ceramics or glassware. Pairing warm historic oak against modern muted paint schemes creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Regularly dust the cabinet using a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity changes to prevent splitting or warping.
