Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Corner cupboards gained widespread popularity during the Georgian era as practical storage solutions designed to utilise underused room corners. Produced in both wall-mounted and full-height standing configurations, they reflected the eras focus on classical symmetry and efficient space planning.

Primary woods included mahogany, oak, and pine. Secondary woods like deal or pine were commonly used for internal shelving and backboards, with pine pieces often receiving grain-painted or scumble-glazed finishes to imitate costlier woods.

Look for construction features such as hand-sawn timber, hand-cut dovetails, brass escutcheons, and original backboards fixed with hand-forged nails. Period pieces often show evidence of traditional wood preparation and authentic age-related wear around hinges and handles.

Position the piece in a dining area, kitchen alcove, or hallway corner to maximise space. Open or glass-fronted sections can be styled with modern ceramics or glassware to create a juxtaposition between historic timber and contemporary design.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleansers or excess moisture. A light application of clear beeswax applied annually protects the surface finish without altering the patination.
