A Rare Early English 18th Century Bachelor’s Writing Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

An extremely rare and highly sophisticated early George II small Bachelor's chest of drawers, boasting an exceptionally unusual, multi-functional design for its period.

The chest is expertly veneered in premium fiddle-back padauk, a highly prized and exotic timber celebrated for its tight, undulating figure and a wonderful satin-like lustre. The timber’s exceptional grain is beautifully enhanced by a rich, warm historical colour and an outstanding original patination.

Ingeniously engineered for dual-purpose utility, the front of the chest features three graduated, oak-lined drawers beneath a false top drawer. Directly above this false drawer front is a pull-out writing slide inset with a finely tooled leather writing surface. To maximise utility and create an expansive, seamless workspace, a cleverly concealed drawer pulls out from each side of the chest's carcass. The right-hand side drawer is historically fitted with compartments for pens and an inkwell bottle.

The chest retains its original brass bail handles, decorative escutcheons, and internal locks, and stands elegantly upon its original shaped bracket feet. It represents a rare opportunity for discerning collectors of early 18th-century English cabinetmaking.

• Origin: England

• Period: George II, circa 1730

• Timber: Fiddle-Back Padauk with English Oak linings

• Condition: Excellent, highly original antique condition. The wood grain displays a deep, authentic patination. Side writing drawers and writing slide operate smoothly; original brasses and locks present throughout.

• Type: Dual-Purpose Bachelor's Chest / Writing Desk

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bachelors writing chest is a compact piece of case furniture developed during the early 18th century, incorporating drawers alongside a pull-out brushing slide or fold-over top for writing and clothing preparation.

Chests from this era typically feature figured walnut veneers laid over oak or pine carcases, accented with cast brass handles, keyhole escutcheons, and hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic period pieces display wide, hand-sawn dovetails, oak-lined drawer bottoms with grain running front-to-back or side-to-side depending on exact date, and natural wear patterns on drawer runners.

These compact units function effectively as hallway accent pieces, bedroom nightstands, or living room side storage, contrasting structured historical woodwork against contemporary minimalist decor.

Preservation requires controlled humidity, avoiding direct sunlight or heat sources, and periodic applications of high-grade beeswax polish rubbed lightly along the grain.
