Japanese Bronze Mother + Child Carrying Fruit

19th century
Description

This finely modelled Japanese bronze group, dating from the Meiji period (1868–1912), depicts a mother and young child gathering and carrying the fruits of the harvest. Dressed in traditional working garments, the pair balance a large woven basket brimming with pumpkins, root vegetables and other produce. Their animated poses and exchanged glance lend the composition warmth, movement and a convincing sense of shared effort. Particularly notable are the crisply rendered basket weave, naturalistically formed vegetables, expressive faces and carefully observed folds of fabric. The rich brown patination enhances the sculptural detail, while the shaped base unifies this charming rural scene.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Meiji period (18681912), Japanese metalworkers transitioned from creating traditional arms and armour to producing decorative art objects known as okimono for export and display. These cast bronze sculptures frequently captured detailed genre scenes, rural life, folklore, and naturalistic figures.

Japanese bronzes were typically created using lost-wax casting (cire perdue) methods, allowing for complex forms and delicate surface details. Artisans applied custom chemical patinas to achieve rich tones ranging from deep chocolate brown to warm reddish copper hues.

Authentic pieces generally display precise hand-chasing, detailed texturing on garments and hair, heavy overall weight, and subtle hand-applied patination. Many authentic works feature a makers mark or artist seal cast or incised directly into the base or underside.

A dark patinated bronze sculpture works well as a focal accent on a minimalist sideboard, console table, or within an open bookcase. Position the piece against light-coloured walls or natural wood surfaces to highlight its sculptural silhouette and detailed craftsmanship.

Dust the sculpture regularly with a clean, soft-bristled brush or dry microfibre cloth. To protect the original patina, avoid liquid cleaners, abrasives, or chemical polishes, applying a thin layer of microcrystalline wax annually to guard against humidity and oxidisation.
