Late 19th Century Painted Centre Table, C.1880

19th century
Description

Late 19th Century Painted Centre Table, c.1880

A highly decorative late 19th century painted centre table, circa 1880, of particularly attractive form and proportions.

The circular top retains a wonderfully time-worn ebonised painted finish, with gentle rubbing and surface character acquired through age and use. This contrasts beautifully with the lightly distressed off-white painted base, giving the table a relaxed, decorative appearance.

The base is especially appealing, raised on four finely turned and fluted legs, united by an architectural cross-stretcher arrangement. At its centre is a particularly attractive turned and fluted finial, creating a strong decorative focal point beneath the table. Subtle carved detailing to the frieze and the naturally aged painted surface further enhance its character.

With its generous circular proportions, this is an excellent centre, hall or occasional table, equally at home in a traditional country-house interior or as a characterful contrast within a more contemporary setting.

The combination of the dark ebonised top, pale painted base and beautifully detailed understructure gives the piece considerable presence while retaining an elegant, light appearance.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, a centre table is a freestanding item of furniture designed to be positioned in the middle of a room or grand entrance hall to be viewed from all angles.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, pine, or beech, finished with coats of paint, gesso, or milk paint, and often featured contrasting dark wooden, slate, or painted tops.

Authentic period tables display natural surface wear and distressing around edges, traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved spiral or turned leg details, and aged patina underneath the paint.

Place the table as a central focal point in an entry hall or living room, styling the top with structured ceramics, art books, or floral displays to balance historical details with modern lines.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or water. Position the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood movement and paint flaking.
