Benjamin Barker of Bath (1776 - 1838) - A Mountainous Landscape Painting with Figures.

19th century
Description

A fine and atmospheric early 19th century landscape of a mountainous wooded landscape, with a waterfall and conversing figures.

Benjamin Barker (1776–1838)

Landscape painter Benjamin Barker was part of the dynasty of Welsh painters descended from Benjamin, foreman and enamel painter at the japan works in Pontypool, Benjamin Barker II was born in Pontypool and later moved to Bath. While their father had specialised in sporting and animal subjects, Benjamin gained fame as a landscape painter during the years 1813–20 he was a large exhibitor of views and landscape compositions at the Watercolour Society and between 1800 and 1821 he exhibited at the Royal Academy. He was also an exhibitor at the British Institution.

His English Landscape Scenery, a volume of forty-eight aquatints published in 1824 was well considered. He died at Totnes after a lingering illness, 2 March 1838, aged 62. Thales Fielding engraved fourty-eight of his landscapes in aquatint.

This fine work is in an excellent state of conservation and is ready to hang in a period gilt composition frame with wonderful mellow gilding.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British landscape painting from this era was heavily influenced by Romanticism, focusing on dramatic natural scenery, picturesque river valleys, atmospheric light effects, and classical composition.

Artists primarily used oil paints made from ground natural pigments mixed with drying oils, painted onto stretched linen canvas or timber panels, and mounted in carved wood and composition frames.

Authentic period paintings typically display age-consistent craquelure across the paint surface, natural timber or canvas oxidisation on the reverse, and original hand-carved details on the gilding.

Position the painting centrally above a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard to establish a focal point, balancing rich gilded framing with modern neutral walls or deep heritage paint colours.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources. Clean the frame gently with a dry, soft brush and avoid using liquid cleaners on the oil surface or gold leaf.
