Fine Victorian Oak & Burr Walnut Nine Drawer Pedestal Desk

19th century
Description

A fine late Victorian oak and burr walnut three-part pedestal desk, dating to circa 1890.

The rectangular top is inset with a green tooled leather writing surface, surrounded by a particularly attractive burr walnut border and moulded edge. Below are three frieze drawers, with a further three graduated drawers to each pedestal, providing a total of nine drawers.

The drawer fronts are beautifully figured in burr walnut and retain turned wooden handles and individual keyholes. The desk is constructed principally in oak, providing an attractive contrast with the richly figured burr walnut veneers.

Of traditional three-part construction, the top separates from the two pedestals, making the desk considerably easier to transport and position.

Of particular interest is the original brass lock plates stamped “Hobbs & Co., London – Lever – Machine Made”. Hobbs & Co. were highly regarded London lockmakers and suppliers of locks for quality cabinet furniture during the Victorian period.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian pedestal desk typically features a rectangular top resting on two free-standing pedestals containing stacked drawers, creating a central space or kneehole for seating. During the nineteenth century, these desks were constructed using robust hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, frequently finished with decorative burr walnut or mahogany veneers on the drawer fronts.

Victorian cabinetmakers primarily used solid oak, mahogany, or pine for the internal carcass, while applying figure-rich timber veneers such as burr walnut, flame mahogany, or rosewood to exterior surfaces. Drawer handles were commonly turned from solid wood or cast in brass, accompanied by brass lever locks.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, original brass or iron mortise locks, and hand-planed backboards. Natural age-related wear, light oxidisation to the drawer bottoms, and evidence of hand tools during construction distinguish period examples from modern reproductions.

A Victorian pedestal desk creates a functional focal point within a home office or library when styled alongside minimalist modern task lighting and contemporary artwork. Pairing dark wood furniture with tailored modern upholstery or sleek leather seating balances historic timber textures with clean lines.

Burr walnut surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft dry cloth and treated periodically with a clear beeswax polish to preserve the wood grain. To protect timber veneers from drying out or lifting, place the furniture away from direct sunlight and heat radiators.
