Fine Quality Set of 10 ( 8 Singles+ 2 Armchairs ) Early C19th Late George III Period Mahogany Dining Chairs.

18th century
For Sale by M Lees and Sons
Description

Fine quality set of 10 (8 singles + 2 armchairs) early C19th late George III period mahogany dining chairs.

Raised of elegant tapering reeded fore-legs with turned feet , of “Trafalgar” design having carved ‘rope-twist’ lumbar bars . The figured mahogany panel backs having an ebony strung line , between reeded frame uprights with turned paterae terminals .

The pair of armchairs with reeded arms raised on carved and reeded supports. The rear legs of ‘sabre’ design with an unusual inverted ‘kick’ to the bottom.

In excellent original condition with no damage or repairs and having achieved a rich colour and patina to the superior dense grade of mahogany. Minor evidence of treated and extinct woodworm to the underside of frames.

Benefitting from clean , serviceable covers with strong webbing beneath, with little signs of wear or usage. All chairs in strong and sound condition , ready to use .

A classic design of early C19th dining chairs , the “Trafalgar” design backs with ‘rope-twist’ bars taking their inspiration from the naval victory of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson over Napoleon’s French fleet at the battle of Trafalgar. The ebony line probably incorporated as a symbol of mourning for the loss of the great Naval national hero of the time, at the sea battle in October 1805 .

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late George III and Regency dining chairs are defined by classical proportions, turned or reeded legs, curved tablet backrails, and the extensive use of warm mahogany timbers.

Craftsmen primarily constructed these chairs using solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers, joined with traditional mortise and tenon wood joinery and fitted with upholstered seat pads.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, natural timber oxidisation on unvarnished undersides, hand-carved reeding or roping details, and gentle wear along the armrests and leg stretchers.

These structured mahogany chairs can be paired with a minimalist contemporary dining table or positioned against modern artwork to create a balanced contrast of historical and modern elements.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct heat sources and bright sunlight, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and applying beeswax polish sparingly to protect the timber finish.
