The firm Edwards and Roberts were among the best English antique furniture cabinet makers of the second half of the eighteenth century. The company was founded in 1845 and by 1854 was trading as ‘Edwards and Roberts’, 21 Wardour Street, ‘Antique and Modern Cabinet Makers and Importers of Ancient Furniture’. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers. They produced high quality furniture, as well as good copies of the 18th and 19th Century English and French pieces. Their workmanship included furniture with satinwood marquetry and favoured the Georgian designs. They were known for restoring adapting older pieces of antique furniture to suit more modern needs. The quality of timber used was always the best, with fine burr walnuts, figured mahogany and lighter toned satinwood.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian pedestal desk consists of a flat writing surface supported by two vertical pedestals containing drawers, providing symmetrical storage and structural support for home or commercial study spaces during the nineteenth century.

High-end Victorian desks were commonly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or ebonised timber, frequently featuring gilt-bronze or brass fittings, intricate marquetry inlays, and gold-tooled leather writing surfaces.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces often feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, stamped makers marks or brass plaques on drawer linings, fine quality marquetry, and period-correct brass hardware such as cast handles and locks.

Integrate the desk into a contemporary study or living room by pairing it with a sleek modern task lamp, neutral wall tones, and contemporary art to balance its dark timber and decorative details.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly to preserved wooden surfaces, while keeping the piece away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and moisture to prevent timber movement or marquetry lifting.
