George Goodwin Kilburn (1839-1924) - A Ride in the Woods. Oil on Panel.

19th century
Description

A fine oil on panel of small proportions of a gentleman riding in the woods by George Goodwin Kilburn RI, RBA (British, 1839-1925). Signed lower right.

The work depicts a gentleman in traditional 19th century hunting clothes mounted on a bay house next to a wooden gate in an autumnal woodland setting. Victorian equestrian art focuses on realistic depictions of horses, hunting scenes, and countryside pursuits. These paintings typically feature refined brushwork, naturalistic landscape settings, and detailed attire representing British country traditions.

Artists during the 19th century frequently painted using oil pigments bound with linseed or walnut oil, applied directly to prepared wooden panels such as mahogany, oak, or pine coated in a gesso ground.

Authentic 19th-century works show natural age craquelure across the paint layer, genuine oxidisation on wood panels or canvas supports, and period-appropriate artist signatures or inscriptions.

Equestrian paintings work well as focal points above mantels, sideboards, or lined along hallway galleries, pairing effectively with warm timber furniture, muted earth tones, and traditional metal accents.

Keep panel paintings in stable environments away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent warping or cracking. Dust gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and avoid liquid cleaners.
