Set of 8 Antique 'J.b. C&w' Victorian Mahogany Balloon Back Dining Chairs C1860

19th century
Description

Set of 8 Victorian Stamped Mahogany Balloon Back Dining Chairs.

A Fine Set of Eight Restored Victorian Mahogany Dining Chairs with J.B. C&W Maker's Mark.

A fine set of eight Victorian mahogany balloon-back dining chairs, dating to circa 1860. Crafted from quality mahogany with a warm, golden-amber tone, this set has been fully restored in our workshop and is ready for use.

Each chair features the classic mid-Victorian swept balloon-back design with a rounded top rail and curved waist. The frames have crisp, turned front legs and elegantly splayed rear sabre legs, with simple molded detailing running along the side seat rails.

All eight chairs bear the same impressed maker's mark, 'J.B. C&W' , directly on the seat rails. The suite consists of an original set of six alongside a matching pair ordered from the same maker at a slightly later date—a common Victorian practice as a family's dining table grew. Because both batches were made in the same workshop using identical templates, the exterior proportions, back profiles, and leg turnings match seamlessly. Subtle historical differences—such as variations in the internal joinery, minor construction changes to the back framing, and the presence or lack of rear back bolts—simply reflect standard 19th-century workshop evolution between the two production runs.

Every frame has been structurally overhauled in our workshop. The joints have been checked, glued, and tightened to ensure the entire set is completely sturdy, exceptionally comfortable, and sound for daily dining. The mahogany has been cleaned and polished with a traditional hand-applied beeswax finish, feeding the wood and bringing out the natural grain.

The removable drop-in seats have been completely rebuilt from the webbing up and freshly reupholstered. They are finished in a durable, textured neutral oatmeal chenille, providing a clean contrast against the polished mahogany and making the set suitable for both period and modern interiors.

As professional restorers, we understand that fabric is a personal choice; should you wish to change the current look, we are happy to provide a quote to re-upholster this set in a material of your choosing to perfectly suit your interior scheme.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Balloon back chairs originated during the early 19th century and became quintessential to Victorian dining design, characterised by an open, rounded waist frame resembling a hot air balloon.

Craftspeople predominantly used solid mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, combining hand-carved backrests with turned front legs and drop-in or upholstered seats.

Authentic pieces typically display hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate timber patination on the underside, stamped cabinetmaker marks, and turned or cabriole legs consistent with mid-19th-century craftsmanship.

Pair these classic wooden frames with a minimalist contemporary dining table or re-upholster the seat cushions in modern neutral fabrics to soften the traditional aesthetic.

Apply natural beeswax polish periodically along the grain, keep the chairs away from direct heat sources to prevent timber cracking, and clear upholstery gently using a soft brush vacuum attachment.
