A Fine Cast Iron Stick Stand (Aesthetic Movement / Date Stamped - 1869)

19th century
For Sale by Culvertons
Description

This finely decorated cast-iron stick or umbrella stand bears a diamond lozenge registration mark dated 20 November 1869, placing it at the start of an important period in industrial decorative design. As the second industrial revolution gathered momentum, foundries including Falkirk, Coalbrookdale and Carron began producing work by celebrated designers such as Christopher Dresser. Richly ornamented cast-iron domestic wares soon appeared in homes and gardens across the country, and few have been surpassed since. Since it was cast at the beginning of this golden age, this stand, like many others, had succumbed to layers of paint that eventually obscured its decorative detail. After careful stripping, burnishing and lacquering, the quality of its design and manufacture is once again visible, and its decorative appeal has been restored. An eye-catching stand that remains in lovely original condition, with no signs of repair or replacement.

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Aesthetic Movement stick stand is a late 19th-century hallway accessory designed to hold umbrellas and walking sticks, characteristically blending Gothic, Japanese, and naturalistic decorative influences into functional metalwork.

Victorian cast iron stick stands were created by pouring molten iron into intricate sand moulds, resulting in heavy decorative pieces that featured removable drip trays at the base to collect water.

Authentic pieces typically feature substantial weight, crisp relief mouldings, diamond registration marks, or stamped date codes on the reverse or base, along with natural surface oxidisation.

Position the stand near an entrance door or porch alongside traditional wall hooks, using its dark metallic silhouette to create contrast against neutral or patterned hallway walls.

Clean the ironwork with a soft dry brush and apply microcrystalline wax to prevent rust, ensuring any moisture accumulating in the removable drip tray is regularly dried.
