Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Edwardian period, artists frequently paid homage to 18th-century British masters such as Gainsborough and Reynolds by reproducing classical sitters in elaborate hats, powdered hair, and flowing garments. These paintings combined traditional grand manner aesthetics with early 20th-century artistic techniques and materials.

Paintings from this period were commonly executed using oil-based pigments applied to stretched canvas or wooden board. Frames were typically crafted from wood coated in molded gesso and covered in gold leaf gilding to create detailed, light-reflecting borders.

Authentic works from this era display signs of age such as natural craquelure in the oil glaze, darkening or oxidisation on the reverse of the panel or canvas, and appropriate wear along the gilding of the gesso frame.

Positioning a gilt-framed classical portrait as a focal point above a mantelpiece or sideboard creates visual interest in modern rooms. Pairing traditional art with contemporary furniture provides a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern aesthetic lines.

Dust the artwork gently with a clean, soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths that can damage the varnish and gold leaf. Keep the painting out of direct sunlight and away from sources of moisture or extreme heat.
