Silhouette of Child with Horse - Attributed to Augustin Edouart (1789-1861)

19th century
Description

A delightful early 19th century paper-cut silhouette of a child pulling a toy horse with a whip in hand.

The silhouette is well executed with delicate outline sketching of a room with a window and balcony beyond. Probably by Augustin Edouart (1789-1861) signature to the lower left rubbed with only an 'au' remaining visible at the beginning and a circle of the top if an 'i'. The work is very much in his manner.

The work is housed in an attractive rosewood frame with gilt slip.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A silhouette portrait is an image of a person or scene represented as a solid shape, typically black on a light background. These likenesses gained widespread popularity in the late 18th and 19th centuries as an affordable alternative to painted miniature portraits before the advent of photography.

19th-century silhouettes were commonly created using black paper cut-outs pasted onto card or plaster backgrounds, or by painting directly onto glass, ivory, or paper using Indian ink. Frames were typically crafted from rosewood, mahogany, or papier-mache, often fitted with a brass or gilded inner slip.

Authentic pieces usually display natural age toning, foxing, or paper discolouration, alongside crisp, precise scissor or knife cuts under magnification. Original backing materials, period framing with hand-cut glass, and artist stamps or inscriptions on the reverse further indicate authenticity.

Antique silhouettes work exceptionally well when arranged in a gallery wall grouping along staircases, narrow hallways, or above a mantlepiece. Combining them with modern black-and-white photography or minimalist art creates an intriguing dialogue between historic craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Display the framed artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent fading and foxing. Ensure UV-filtering protective glass is used and that acid-free mounting materials support the paper inside the frame.
