Delightful Painted Silhouette of a Child Circa 1820

19th century
Description

This neatly painted full-length silhouette shows a child in a short-sleeved dress, bootees and a delightful and eye-catching bonnet trimmed with ostrich feathers and tied under the chin with a ribbon bow. The toy whip suggests it is a little boy.

Painted in shades of black with gold highlights reserved for the hair only and set in a handsome burr walnut frame with a gilt slip. There is a small area of loss to the veneer on one corner and slight age darkening to the card, as would be expected, but otherwise in fine condition and ready to hang.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A silhouette portrait from the Regency era (circa 18111820) is a profile depiction painted or cut from black paper, popularised prior to the advent of photography as an accessible method of portraiture.

Antique silhouettes were typically painted using Indian ink or watercolour on paper, card, plaster, or ivory, often housed in polished wooden or papier-mache frames with gilded metal slips.

Authentic 19th-century silhouettes feature natural paper age-toning, era-appropriate framing techniques such as birds eye maple veneer, and crisp hand-painted or cut edges rather than modern reproduction printing dots.

Silhouette portraits function well when integrated into a curated gallery wall or displayed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or narrow wall space to add historical interest to contemporary rooms.

Keep paper silhouettes away from direct sunlight and high humidity, ensuring they are protected by UV-filtering glass and archival mounting materials to prevent fading and discolouration.
