Edwardian Oak Pedestal Desk

1900 - 1920
Description

A lovely antique oak desk dating from the early 20th Century. It has an arrangement of 9 drawers around a central kneehole. Each drawer has its original art nouveau style brass handles and the pedestals have a plinth base with small castors below. The top of the desk has a beautiful inset green leather writing surface with a gilt tooled edge.

It is an excellent quality example made from solid oak with panelled sides, nicely shaped drawer fronts and oak linings. The desk is nicely finished on all sides so would suit being in the centre of a room as well as being against a wall.

The desk is in very good condition for its age and has been well looked after. The oak has a lovely warm colour and the drawers open smoothly. The inside of the drawers are generally clean and tidy with just some minor ink stains and old marks. There are some normal signs of age and use, a few minor knocks and light surface marks but nothing detrimental. The desk does not come with any keys. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced between 1901 and 1910, Edwardian pedestal desks feature two vertical columns of drawers supporting a flat top, typically fitted with a leather writing insert and clean, balanced proportions.

These desks were commonly crafted from solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, brass swing handles, and leather writing surfaces.

Look for construction details such as hand-cut dovetailed drawer joints, period-correct brass hardware, solid timber panelled backboards, and natural age-related wear around handles and lock mechanisms.

Position the desk in a light-filled study paired with contemporary brass task lighting and a sleek upholstered chair to create a balanced contrast between period woodwork and modern design.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a microfibre cloth, treat the wood with beeswax polish annually, and apply specialised leather conditioner to the top insert to prevent cracking.
