Description

A striking work depicting the Cambridge to London stage coach, dashing through the countryside with the colleges of Cambridge to the background horizon. The coach depicted is consistent with those in use circa.1840.

The work is unusually composed with unpainted board left to create contrast in the ground and skies. The stage coach is filled with multiple passengers wearing top hats and jackets, with one solitary man visible within the carriage conversing with those above. Two women with their dogs are depicted to the lower right, before a cottage and signposts. 'Cambridge / London' written in yellow to the side of the coach. Illegible signature just above to the carriage door.

The work is housed in an attractive oak glazed frame. Label verso states the work was repaired by Albert Studios in association with Frost & Reed Ltd, of Clare Street Bristol and Bon Street London on 6th July 1953.
