Antique Early 20th Century Burr Walnut Writing Desk by Wylie & Lochhead Glasgow

1920 - 1940
Description

A beautiful antique early 20th Century burr walnut writing desk by the respected Scottish maker Wylie & Lochhead Ltd of Glasgow, dating from circa 1920–1930. Renowned for their high quality craftsmanship and elegant period revival furniture, Wylie & Lochhead produced some exceptionally well made pieces during the early 20th Century, and this desk is a wonderful example of their work.

Featuring a beautifully shaped serpentine front, stunning figured burr walnut drawer fronts and elegant cabriole legs, the desk has a wonderfully refined and timeless appearance. The rich warm walnut colour and striking grain patterns give the piece exceptional character and depth, while the decorative brass drop handles complement the design beautifully.

The desk is fitted with a beautifully restored leather writing surface with gilt tooling, creating a classic and highly practical writing area suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. Offering excellent storage space through its multiple drawers, the desk remains compact and versatile in size, making it ideal for a study, home office, bedroom or living room.

Presented in very good condition overall, with light age-related wear consistent with age and use, adding to the charm and authenticity of the piece.

This particular desk features a burgundy leather writing surface. A second matching desk with an olive green leather top is also available separately under another listing. Both desks are in equally beautiful condition and may work wonderfully as a pair.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Queen Anne Revival furniture from the early 20th century combines 18th-century design elements such as cabriole legs, pad feet, and figure-grained walnut veneers with refined Edwardian cabinetmaking techniques.

Cabinetmakers utilised solid walnut or hardwood frames surfaced with highly figured burr walnut veneers, incorporating dove-tailed drawer construction and cast brass hardware.

Look for dove-tailed drawer joints, maker stamps or metal badges inside drawers or on undersides, natural surface patination, and hand-carved details on cabriole knees.

Position the desk as a focal point in a home office or living room alcove, pairing it with neutral wall tones, modern task lighting, and subtle desktop accessories.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply high-quality beeswax sparingly along the wood grain once or twice a year, and position away from direct heat sources or damp environments.
