18th Century Georgian Mahogany Pedestal Partners Desk, Chippendale Period

18th century
Description

A Rare And Very Good Quality 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Pedestal Partners Desk, Having Attractive Gilt Tooled Old Leather Inset To Crossbanded Top, Over Three Drawers With Old Replacement Brass Handles And Cockbead Panelled Cupboard Doors With Adjustable Sliding Shelves To Each Side, Raised On Original Plinth Base With Recessed Old Castors.

Partners desks dating from the 18th century are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples which have survived in such honest, usable condition. Originally designed to allow two people to work opposite one another, they are among the most practical and impressive forms of Georgian office furniture ever produced.

This is a particularly attractive example, constructed in well figured mahogany throughout, retaining a good colour and pleasing surface which has developed naturally over the course of more than 250 years. The old gilt tooled leather writing surface sits particularly well with the desk, whilst the replacement brass handles have clearly been in place for many years and complement the piece extremely well.

As with many Georgian desks, there are signs of honest wear and use which simply reflect the practical purpose for which it was originally made. These should be regarded as part of the desk's history and character rather than imperfections and only serve to reinforce its authenticity.

Wonderfully practical as well as decorative, the arrangement of drawers and cupboards provides excellent storage, whilst the adjustable sliding shelves housed within each pedestal offer particularly useful and versatile accommodation. Equally at home in a traditional study or a contemporary office, it is the sort of desk which is intended to be used and enjoyed every day.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this Georgian partners desk has been inspected in our workshops by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers and is ready to be placed into the home immediately.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A partners desk is a freestanding pedestal desk designed in 18th-century Britain to allow two individuals to work facing each other. These pieces featured matching sets of drawers or cupboards on both sides.

Desks from this period were constructed from solid and veneered mahogany, incorporating oak or pine secondary timbers, hand-cut dovetail joints, and cast brass swan-neck handles.

Authentic Georgian desks display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetails on drawer linings, natural wood shrinkage along panel seams, and period-appropriate cast brass hardware.

Position the desk centrally within a study or home library to showcase its double-sided construction, complemented by a tailored leather desk chair and modern brass task lighting.

Position the timber away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight, dust regularly with a dry cloth, and apply a beeswax polish annually along the direction of the wood grain.
