George III Oak Wall Hanging Corner Cupboard C.1780

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A handsome George III oak hanging corner cupboard dating from circa 1780, of pleasing proportions and with an excellent rich colour and patina.

The cupboard is constructed in oak with a moulded cornice above a single fielded arched panel door enclosing shaped internal shelves. The door opens smoothly, the cupboard retaining the honest wear and character expected from a well-preserved eighteenth-century country piece.

With its compact proportions and honest patina, it makes an attractive and practical cupboard for a wide variety of interiors.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 94 cm

Width: 77 cm

Depth: 41 cm

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition commensurate with age. The oak has developed a beautiful deep colour and patina with the expected light marks, knocks and wear acquired over more than two centuries. There is no working key, but a suitable key is supplied to pull open the door, which remains securely closed under its own weight. Structurally sound and ready for use.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th century, hanging corner cupboards were designed to utilise unused corners for discreet storage of glassware, tea, or everyday household items.

English country versions were predominantly crafted from solid oak or pine, often incorporating brass escutcheons, wrought iron or brass hinges, and hand-cut pegged joinery.

Authentic period examples feature hand-planed backboards, hand-forged nails or screws, evidence of natural age oxidisation, and pegged mortise and tenon joint construction.

Mounting the cupboard in an unutilised dining room corner or entryway provides functional storage while introducing historic warmth and rich timber tones to modern interiors.

Regular dusting with a soft dry cloth and periodic applications of beeswax polish preserve the natural patina, while maintaining a stable humidity prevents timber shrinkage and cracking.
