Popularised during the eighteenth century in Georgian Britain, a tilt-top table features a circular or oblong tabletop hinged to a central turned pedestal supported by three cabriole legs. The tilting mechanism allowed the table to be stored flat against a wall when not in use for serving tea or wine.

Georgian tilt-top tables were predominantly crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, prized for its dense grain and rich reddish-brown tone. Oak and walnut were also utilised, often constructed using hand-dovetailed catch blocks and iron or brass latch mechanisms.

Authentic eighteenth and nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit hand-cut dovetails on the underside block, hand-turned pedestals with minor irregularities, and wear consistent with age around the latch release.
